I just came across this article from 2014 where classic novels were matched up with some "obscure" novels from years past. Many sound quite interesting, so I thought I'd share!

Tell Your Students! Cool "Happening" @ the Denver Library This Saturday!!
Cereal Saturday: Pilot Project
Saturday, October 3, 8 a.m.-noon.
Calling all kids! And that means all grown up kids, too, who love watching Saturday morning cartoons while devouring a big bowl of cereal. Denver Public Library is hosting this tribute to the days of ‘yore’ youth – we’ll be screening great cartoons from the 60’s right up through to the new millennium. Lots of fun retro stuff. And we’ll serve it up with a cereal bar of fun, nostalgic cereals – and healthy choices, too! But it gets even better for the real kiddos in the audience. Have homework that you need help with? Working on a project for school that is lacking good resource materials? Our reference librarians will be on hand to help with any homework or research project needs you have for school. So, yes, Moms and Dads – you are reading that right. Bring the kids and their research needs, and while you are feasting on Count Chocula and watching The Pink Panther, your mini-me can get some research assistance. This Saturday event is a test run and may return in the future! Free and open to the public.

Plickers
This was shared by a 6th grade teacher at my school ... incorporates the teacher's cell phone and QR codes ... kind of the modern version of whiteboard check-in.

Two interesting science sites
I have a passion for science. Sadly, I just don't have the brain for it. Seriously, my mind cannot remember all the names and equations and scientific methods ... THANKFULLY I can still get my science fix with sites like these:
OLOGY - provides TONS of kid friendly information on all the various "ologies"
explOratorium - has great links to scientific websites, videos, and much more.

Did you know there is an Office of Educational Technology?
I was perusing the internet today looking for some great tech links and came across the "Office of Educational Technology." What? We have a formal government agency in charge of technology in education? Cool!!!

Virtual Field Trips - Google+
Connected Classrooms offers classes the opportunity Virtual Fieldtrips via Google+ ! WOW! This looks amazing!
MyMaps
Jennie Magiera's January 5th, 2015 column 10 Classroom Ideas to Try in 2015 mentions using MyMaps to have students tell a story. MyMaps is a component of Google Maps. The site looks easy to use, and with more and more districts bringing Google apps into the classroom, students should be able to access MyMaps without any problems. I'm going to test drive the site in the next few weeks ... I'll let you know how it goes.

Using Cell Phones for the Classroom
It's been about nine months since I last posted ... I've been busy acclimating to my new position as an elementary librarian ... but I'm back now! I hope to post weekly highlights of various resources that can be used within your classroom!
I've mentioned this site before, but it worth repeating. Socrative is a WONDERFUL tool that can be used in the classroom to check for student understanding. And, the best thing about it is it is FREE!!!

It works like this ...
You create a "room" and input either a quiz, a quick poll question or even an "exit ticket".
Students use their smartphones, laptops, or tablets and log into the "room". They input their answers and suddenly you receive the information! You now have access to whether or not your students are understanding the material and/or task at hand!
